Keeping your work as your own

Have any of you wondered about things you create as a GA? Is that stuff yours? Is it the offices? Intellectual property seems pretty hot in academia and I'm starting to apply for jobs (real ones) at different universities. So, I made a whole new seminar about financing a study abroad experience. Does that intellectual property come with me or is it forever the property of my office? There's not a little blurb on it that says, "done by Jill."

I mean, professors get all bent out of shape about their syllabi, so I'm just wondering what's "mine" after I graduate.

Do y'all have any experience with this? Know any articles about this?

I don't know. I think that's an interesting point. It may be different for each university and/or professor b/c each has a different organizational culture. I'm in I/O psych and I know that things we create here at my university (Western Kentucky U) are mostly our's to take on and do as we wish but it's an unwritten rule to leave it behind for use.

Do you think it matters when I'm a GA for an office (career services) and not a professor?

My stuff is totally on my resume, but I want to take the presentation with me and my handouts.

Well, I wouldn't see a problem w/that. I would think that would make it more ok than taking it from a professor b/c you know that a professor will use it for learning purposes but an office might use it for other stuff. That's just my opinion.

Great point, I agree with the other poster that it is likely a case by case policy. I produce several workshops, and can't imagine not being able to take my outlines with me. If all else fails, at least the jist of my workshops are stored in my head, so if all else fails I could simple reproduce them from scratch. Any general publications our office puts out might be trickier to claim as my own, but my intellectual property will stay with me ... I hope. :)
